Tuesday - October 7 - Tiffany

Today's passage from the Bible In a Year Reading Plan is Jeremiah 9-10; Proverbs 29; 2 Timothy 4
Today's scripture focus is Mark 8:1-10

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. 10 And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

We see this story in several places, with several different numbers of people or loaves listed.

Matthew Henry made a note on this that really stood out to me in his commentary found on biblegateway.com:

As Christ has a compassion for all that are in wants and straits, so he has a special concern for those that are reduced to straits by their zeal and diligence in attending on him. Christ said, I have compassion on the multitude. Whom the proud Pharisees looked upon with disdain, the humble Jesus looked upon with pity and tenderness; and thus must we honour all men. But that which he chiefly considers, is, They have been with me three days, and have nothing to eat. Whatever losses we sustain, or hardships we go through, for Christ’s sake, and in love to him, he will take care that they shall be made up to us one way or other. They that seek the Lord, shall not long want any good thing, Ps. 34:10

If life is hard because of your zeal for Christ, He will repay that. I needed to hear that today. I'm going to cling to that, to Psalm 34:10, to Mark 8:2 and Christ's compassion.

I love that this also expresses that Jesus is the Bread of Life for the Gentile, as well as the Jew.
